Self-storage is a convenient way to temporarily keep your belongings when you don’t currently have the space for it. It’s useful when you have to store away some stuff while you’re moving, having your home remodeled, or need a space that will keep your valuables safe too. Many people even use storage units to keep boats and vehicles if they lack the garage space. If you’re considering getting a storage unit, what size is the right size for you?

While it’s generally a good rule of thumb to rent a unit that’s slightly bigger than what you actually need to future-proof your storage needs, you still have to start somewhere. Some units are large enough to accommodate fishing boats while others are similar in size to a small broom closet. Still, determining what storage unit size you need can be confusing. If you’re not sure how to go about this, check out this guide:

  • Start by taking an inventory of your belongings. Before deciding on a size, you should have an idea of how many things you’re planning to store away. That way, it’s much easier to visualize how big you need the unit space to be. Use a measuring tape to get the dimensions of larger items like furniture, vehicles, and different appliances as those take up more room. The bigger your inventory, the bigger the space and vice versa. When it’s time to store everything away, make sure to hire moving and storage services you can trust to give yourself peace of mind.
  • Know your sizes. There are a number of standard sizes of storage units that are made specifically for certain items. A 25 square-foot unit is recommended for small personal items while a 300 square-foot space can accommodate several pieces of furniture and appliances. Many facilities have a complete list of their unit sizes and prices so you can ask to see what they have available and go from there.
  • Think of how you plan to organize everything. Once you know more or less what you’re going to put in your storage unit, think about how you’re going to load everything into the unit. You’ll probably have boxes and crates full of things you want to put away, and it’s good to stack them up properly to save space. However, there may be items in your inventory that can’t fit in a box and aren’t stackable, so you need to allot space for them in the unit. Considering these will help you decide on the right inventory size.
  • Consider accessibility. Will you still need to use your belongings or are you storing them away because you won’t need them for a while? You won’t need a big unit if you don’t see yourself coming back often to use the items you have stored away. The extra space may not be worth paying for if you’re not always going to come back for it. If you need access to the belongings that you have in storage, go for a larger space. This will allow you to better organize everything into stacks and aisles so you can walk around and pick out whatever you need to use.
  • When in doubt, size up. If you’re still unsure about what storage unit size is good for you, go for the bigger space. Doing so will account for the other items you might want to store in the future and saves you the hassle of having to move everything to another unit. Moreover, the price difference between storage spaces may not be too big so paying for the extra space might be worth doing. However, you can always get POD containers to store your other belongings if you still think sizing up isn’t a good idea.

Deciding on the right size for a storage space can be difficult as your needs can change over time. But by following the guidelines mentioned above, you can better estimate the size of your space so you can keep your belongings safe, have access to them, and add more in the future after you get the storage space.
